We decided to give our Volvo S60 content car the famous "PCV Glove Test," where you remove the oil cap and slip a rubber glove over in its place.

The PCV system should ideally have negative pressure so if you start your engine and the glove inflates, well, you've got yourself a problem. The problem:. When this happens, your engine can start to consume engine oil, and in some severe cases it can even start to push out engine seals such as camshaft and crankshaft seals the result of pressure buildup in the engine.

Below you can see some carbon blockage at the bottom of the breather box where it enters the engine block. Additionally, you can see the hard plastic hose from the PCV nipple has been completely clogged solid. In some cases, this hose can even snap off. We cut this hose in half for demonstration purposes. If you look closely, you can actually see that the entire hose is clogged. A PCV positive crankcase ventilation breather system is designed to regulate hazardous waste from your vehicle.

As your engine runs, combustion gases escape from the combustion chamber, finding their way into the crankcase of your engine. This unused combustion gas, also referred to as "blow-by," can be a major cause of smog. A PCV system prevents pollutants from escaping into the environment, and vehicle manufacturers started fitting engines with a PCV valve to ensure that gas remains contained within your vehicle.

In naturally aspirated engines, the PCV valve connects the crankcase to the intake manifold.

It does this from a location nearly opposite of the breather location. This connection creates a slight vacuum in the crankcase that draws gasses in a direction from the breather into the intake manifold and through the PCV valve, where they are re-burned with a fresh charge of air.

I've seen images of something labeled as an oil trap that looks like a box shaped part. In another context, I hear people talking about breather boxes. It sounds like they're talking about the same part, just with some synonymous terminology. If they are the same then I would assume that each terminology emphasizes some functionality of the box: one to trap oil from someplace, the other as some kind of breathing apparatus. It looks like Volvo is doing something a little abnormal where they have integrated the PCV valve with an oil trap and possibly a couple other components.

Lets break it all down:. This is used to pull gases that collect in the crankcase, through the intake to get burned in the combustion chamber. It is a valve to protect the engine from backfires as shown below:. Since there is suction these can get clogged with oil which Volvo looks to have addressed with their part.

First, what the HECK is a oil trap? Well if you're old like me you will remember the old PCV system which is an acronym for Positive Crankcase Ventilation system which basically allows your engine to breath without pollution the environment or at least reducing the affect on the environment. The PCV system allows your engine to breath but channels harmful emissions back into the engine before leaving via the exhaust system.

Volvo has improved on the old system by adding a filter which is contained inside a plastic box called the oil trap which filters the air before returning it back to the crankcase which in-turn should mean cleaner emissions. Second, why does my Volvo engine need to breath? Well not to get too technical but similar to fire the combustion engine needs 3 things air, fuel and spark. Once the air gets inside the engine most of it exits via the exhaust but some of it gets trapped into the crankcase and needs to get out.

The problem is it is no longer clean air because it has picked up oil residue and gunk along the way so it has to be cleaned or burned before leaving via the exhaust.

Where is the oil trap located? Volvo's from about had a small, black, plastic box that bolted onto the side of the engine block right under the intake manifold. On later Volvo's the oil trap may be the same or bolted onto the cylinder head. The later C30, C70, S40, V50 five cylinder engines have the oil trap as part of the oil filter housing.

Why haven't I heard of this before? Well that's the most frustrating part about this and it's the reason why I am building this list. The Volvo oil trap can cause a lot of problems ranging from minor to catastrophic so I wish Volvo did a better job telling people about replacing the oil trap on a regular basis. Please accept my recommendations as the truth and not a sales pitch.

I especially hate it when people on a fixed income are affected. Top 10 Reasons why the Volvo oil trap should be replaced every K miles. It's a filter. I would think if I reved the engine the sound would increase and maybe go away if it was a belt. When I rev the engine the sound does not increase so I don't think it's a belt issue. I turned the AC on and the sound did not change or go away.

My alternator is staying steady at Been pretty cold here in the mid west Any suggestions I also noticed if I turn the steering wheel it does not affect the noise I guessing it might be the water pump Problem Solved Well the check engine light came on this morning The dealer has to order the part NO charge The clogged oil engine trap is what caused the whining sound and the check engine light Mar 29PM.

Post 2. This sounds exactly like what's happening on my v50 T5 AWD with 62k miles. I never thought to look into there being possible coverage for this because I bought the car used about a year ago with 50k miles on it and was told the warranty was expired. Revving the engine doesn't make the sound go away, but when I reach highway speeds the sound is gone. Yes the check engine light is one, but I haven't hooked up a code reader yet.

I've ordered one but it won't be here until Friday. Do you happen to still have the work order from when yours was fixed? Do you know what the code was for the repair or the part number?
